Essence of China

On my way back from Shanghai, I walked down a street near my apartment at night where hundreds of workers were still working away—“burning the night oil” as they call it. They had small cots and tents shabbily set up on the side of the road. After work, they all shower in the street with a small hose.

This is the essence of China: communal kitchens, communal showers, cheap and dirty food, lack of caution tape, and development that stops for neither night nor rain.
